Till Death Do Us Part - Final Cut

This is our AS media coursework. I like our piece because it is individual and different and took us a lot of time to work upon.

I feel that all the editing and scenes fit in well with eachother. However the negatives are that when we were editing it on the Mac it didnt come out this dark, so i am hoping that the better quality one isnt this dark otherwise we will be marked down.

Survey for Film

Music we used in our film

This is the Chopin Waltz track we used at the beginning of our film. We believed that it was best for the film because we wanted to use the radio and decided that it gave our women more of a personality. The Jazz track made us believe that the audience could relate to the women and the audience would have to keep guessing what was going to happen.

This is the Honorable discharge track which is played throughout the whole things from the middle onwards. I like this track because it is jumpy and fast, but is also slow. I feel that it fits in with the rest of my film, and so I am glad we decided to use this track.

Production company sign

this is the sign we are using at the beginning of our film. this is because we needed to use something to bring the film in, rather than starting straight away with the film starting. Averielle played around with different font types, and then we decided to use a knife as this was our type of film, making people understand that this is a horror-thriller subgenre. We played around with different backgrounds starting with a white background with red text.

We used red text because we decided that red was associated with horror thrillers, and therefore decided that this was the best thing for our horror thriller film.

We decided to go with the black background as it looked better when placed with our film, although we wanted the red text to be shown more on the white background.

Survey Questions

When we completed our film, we needed people to analyse it so that we were able to get feedback and information on what they thought was good. I decided to think of some research questions which I could use to help get analysis on my film.

  • What do you think the genre is?
  • Why do you think this?
  • What type of media institution (channel 4, WarnerBrothers, Disney etc) might distribute our media product?
  • Why do you think this?
  • Who do you think is the target audience - male, female, old, young?
  • Did this media product target you?
  • Did you connect with the characters?
  • Do you think we made the right choice of music?
  • What is your favorite part of the clip?
  • What do you think could be improved?

Filming the Killing Scene.

It has been very difficult being able to create the killing scene in which we want to look lifelike and realistic. At the beginning, we realized it was going to be difficult because we were unsure how to make it look like she was going to be stabbing him when she cant go too close with the knife. The first try we used the shadows on the wall, this turned out difficult, because Averielle's hand looked limp and unrealistic. therefore we decided to have her bringing her hand up above her head, from Josh's point of View. This helped us establish a new shot which we hadn't used before. This idea came from Alfred Hitchcock's film 'Psycho'. This is the easiest way to create a stab scene without having to show the audience him being dead.

Week before deadline!

On Monday, our group arranged to reshoot. Me and Alice had everything ready and then Averielle decided that she couldn’t film. This meant that our group had to think of another time to reshoot and we couldn’t do any other days with josh until Thursday, which was too late as that was our deadline.

On Tuesday, Alice and I worked on music and title sequence for our film. This was difficult as we didn’t know exactly what music we wanted to put in and we knew that we had to have music throughout the whole thing.

We realised that we had to film on our Wednesday lesson. Alice and I filmed Averielle walking into the room. This proved a difficult task and took up our whole hour. We filmed from different angles, so that we had a variety to choose from when it came to editing.

Again, when we uploaded these we found it too dark. This meant that we couldn’t use the shots and was difficult because we had to find a way to edit in exactly what we already had but so that it worked for us.

On Thursday, we edited everything together with the new reshoots and music. We tried to make the film look the best we could. As we felt that we needed some feedback, we got Mr Ford to watch through our film, and he told us that it didn’t make sense, even though he had seen our storyboard and we had explained what we were trying to achieve. Therefore we ended up changing the whole sequence of our shots. This meant that every shot without a knife went first, and then the shots that Averielle did have a knife in came second. We also changed around where we were putting our title as we found out it couldn’t go where we wanted it to. This therefore meant that we had to find a new place for our title to go, and we worked this in just before the stabbing scene as we decided that we could hear the stabbing before we saw him dead.

Over the last few days

Over the last few days, Alice, Averielle and I have been trying to get our film finished for both Mr Ford and Mr Michie. We found that we have been filming during school hours and stayed after school last Thursday in order to try and get all our filming done and up to date. We had the list of things to film, and therefore worked through them as quickly and easily as possible.

Alice and I played around with the different shots we could get of the knife. This meant that we had a variety of angles and therefore when it came to choosing which shot to put in the final thing, we knew exactly what we had and which we could use.

We tried to do lots of angles from Joshes P.O.V. This was important because we wanted to change up our variety of shots as we feel that we didn’t have that many. This meant that we had to film sitting on the chair, which was not a good idea. This was because it blocked the light of the lamp which we normally use, which made all of our shots dark and we were unable to use many of them.

I uploaded all this footage on Friday, and watched through it & cut the bits which I thought we may be able to use. As I was the only one editing, I didn’t want to make any large alterations, but I felt that I had to do something to help our group on the way.

Music.

Our group is finding it difficult to find music which fits into the end part of our film, and we also are finding it hard to explain why the music is like this at the beginning.
We want the music at the beginning to be classical in the red room, so that the woman and her actions are juxtaposed with the music. We realise that we may have to get a radio to enable us to have some diegetic sounds and also to show that thats why we have this type of music on the website.
On the end of our title sequence, we want a music soundtrack that shows the build up of the flashes, perhaps starting slowly then becoming faster as time moves on. This is proving difficult to find online, and without copyright. If we find a track we like, we find that it doesnt fit in with our film, or is to fast for what we are trying to show.
I found a track which I thought may fit into our film, but as we played it with the actions we wanted it to fit in with we realised it made the opening sounds more like an ending, therefore making us unable to use it.

First draft filming finished.

We finished filming all the first draft films the other day. This meant we could start post production, and start editing everything we filmed together.
Although we had a lot of footage, it was nice to be able to look through it and be able to pick out which were better than the others.
I feel that now all the filming for the first draft is finished, we can go back and look at what needs to be re-shot and then edited so that we are able to complete our final draft by the deadline.

Filming on schedule!

Wednesday:

On Wednesday, Averielle, Josh and I stayed behind to film the scenes of them together. We borrowed a red dress and black heels and then filmed in the art room. We managed to get most of this scene filmed even though we did not have the knives. We worked through our storyboard after looking at it that afternoon, and found the parts we could do and parts that we couldnt. We decided to film from many different angles so that it worked best when we put it onto the computer.

Thursday:

On Thursday, we had a double media lesson. In the first lesson, Alice removed everything from the media room whilst I uploaded Wednesday's footage onto the computer. Avey went to print off pictures of 'past victims' and created them as pictures from a polaroid camera. Alice and I then set up the 'red room' (pictures soon) and got 3 lamps - although we only used two - and then cut out the squares of red plastic to put over the lamps to get the red effect. We then got a line of string and taped it to the wall. Avey and I got 5 pegs from Art so that we could use them to hang up the pictures, then I went back down to the media room and helped alice to lay out pictures that we weren't using. We then tried the camera out to see if the red effect was picked up on camera. We decided that it looked red enough, even if we thought it had been better before.
When Avey came back down with the pictures, we all decided that the room looked fairly plain, so we got discarded newspapers and random scraps of paper, as well as tape, string, scissors and two trays containing water - which we decided would come across as developers. We then tried to put red crosses onto the pictures and realised you couldnt see them when we started to film, so Avey got some red 'poster paint' and a paint brush from art and we put crosses over the men in the pictures. This worked better and we placed the paint and the paintbrush onto the table so it looked more busy. After we placed these things on the table,  we decided to start filming. I started to film, first going over the stuff on the table, and then working up to the pictures. We found this took way to long, and so Alice had a go at filming from different angles.
We then put the footage onto the computer and it looked better than we thought. The red effect was picked up more on the computer than it was when we were filming, and we watched over past footage. Alice and avey then cleaned up the room, whilst i uploaded the rest of todays footage onto the computer.

Alice and I stayed through our next free period to put the footage together, and look over the footage that had been filmed the past few days. We tried to put the footage together with some of the effects and also tried to put some of the clips together. This proved more difficult than first thought of. After working on this for an hour, we discussed what still needed to be filmed and this is what we thought off.

  • The knife shots to be put in as flashes
  • Showing the map and picture at the end of the next victim.
  • turning on the radio in the red room
Friday:

On friday, Alice and Avey and Josh are staying behind to film their parts of the film. Alice will be filming whilst avey and Josh acting. They will try and do the Knife shots from behind Avey, and then other ways that will help to create a scary effect. We will also have a shot of her opening the knives as this will help the audience to realise what is actually happening. We will then have her showing a picture of the next victim and the map, so that we know that the story is not ending yet but just beginning.

Monday:

On Monday we will film turning on the radio in the red room. This shouldn't take very long and therefore we will have all the footage ready for tuesday.

Tuesday 21 February 2012

Lighting

In the little room we are using, we found that it was difficult to light it so that we could light up the male character whilst keeping the rest of the room dark and Dull. We found that if we used one lamp the room had just enough light, and this was the effect we wanted.

this is the dark room, with Josh tied up in the middle ready for the first time we shoot him in our film. We are also using this picture for the red room.

Deadlines.

We have been reminded of our deadline and we need to plan our filming and editing accordingly. Here is our deadlines:

February 29th: Filming to be completed: Ensure you have plenty of footage. Post-production should have started.
March 16th: Rough Cut in Full to be presented to FRD-Media 1 Lunchtime.
March 30th: Projects to be completed: Final Cuts This is the lastday before Easter holidays
April 16th: Blog completed with finished Evaluation ( ppt with visual aids) This is after Easter.

By knowing these deadlines, I will need to make sure that I can stick to them and get all the filming and editing done in time. This means that my group and I will need to work closely together in order to find if we have everything ready for filming.

Filming

Today we realized that we really needed to look over the footage that we already had filmed. We realized that we needed to re-film most things as the lighting was different in each shot. We got hold of both our actors, and they then said that they couldn't film - and they couldn't film on most days which we needed them. Therefore, we decided that we needed to change the actors we had. This was one of the hardest decisions we had made as a group as it meant we basically had to start again. Josh stepped in from another media group and said he was able to film, which made it easier for us as all we had to do was find another female character. This was difficult so we decided to get things as effective as possible and decided that we needed to film Averielle, as she was available when we needed to film.
After school, Alice & I stayed back to start filming Josh, and this meant we got the waking up scene and were able to get this started.
Tomorrow, Averielle and I will start to film the pair together, and this will enable us to get to the same place we were before if we work solidly for 2 hours. We may need 2 cameras so that we can capture both angles of the shot and this will also save us time. Before we film, we need to take a look back over our storyboard so we are able to see the couple together. We may also need to bring in knives, so we can film this effectively and within the right time period.
Thursday morning we will film the red scene with Avey in Media lessons. this will help us use our time effectively and will also mean that on Friday we can film the things we haven't finished with yet.
Friday, Alice and Avey will be filming Josh and her together.
Hopefully, we can get everything done within this time period. If we still have something to do before the filming deadline on Tuesday, we will finish up on Monday.
This therefore means we will get all our filming done, and we will be able to start editing as soon as possible.

Friday 3 February 2012

Starting Filming

On Monday, Avey and I started filming Becca and Ben. We had a bit of trouble because Becca forgot her dress, so we had to improvise and film Ben's part on his own. This means that we could still do some filming and get it all on the way to finishing. Firstly, it took a while to get everything ready - such as the tape, string and outfits. We then managed to get the lighting in the right place because we decided that we were going to use a lamp behind Ben in order to get just enough light, but not to little or too much.
We managed to film all of the parts in which we needed too, so that Ben only needed to film with Becca.
I found it difficult to work with Ben as I was put in charge of filming, and both Becca And Averielle laughed each time Ben did facial reactions. This meant that it was difficult for Ben not to stop acting and so he laughed too.
I'm starting to realise it may be difficult to work with the pair, and maybe we didn't make the best choice choosing them both. I do feel however, that we are starting to get on track of what we need to do and i feel confident that we will finish our film in time.

Animatic

This is our animatic which is created from our storyboard. It helped us to know about the different transitions we needed to use when we actually edit our work, and also helps us to know about the places where we wanted to put our titles. This helps us because we now know how long each shot should be and this helps us to know when we're actually coming to filming and editing. This video gives us an idea of how long our video is going to be, and also helped us to realise that we needed to add extra things in in order to know the storyline and how its going to carry on.

Before Filming..

We decided that we could no longer use Izzy to film our work. We decided this because she doesnt have much free time after school, and this is mostly where we needed to use our filming and this is where we needed to take time out to actually film. Therefore, we decided that we needed to switch our main female character.
We chose to use Becca Bentley, and although she is not longer the 'typical blonde' that we wanted, we still think that she will be able to do a good job because herself and Ben will be able to work together to create the effect that we need.
We hope to start filming on Monday, with both Becca and Ben.

Audience's and Institutions Powerpoint

This is the powerpoint I created for 'Heat' Magazine as part of the Audiences and Institutions work.
It helped me to understand how many magazines were actually owned by the same people and therefore how many companies were actually around.

Audiences and Institutions

In our previous lesson with Mr Michie on monday, we were given a task to complete by next monday. This task was looking at different magazines, and finding out this information about them to create a powerpoint presentation. Firstly, we need to look at the ownership of the magazine, this is the company behind the production of the magazine and will be quite easy to find the information out too. These are the questions in which we must answer.

Ownership:
  • Who publishes the magazine?
  • Which other titles do they publish?
  • Are there any particular sectors of the Magazine Industry that they dominate?
  • Who is their parent company?
  • Who/What else do they own?
We also need to look closely at the magazine we have been given seperately. This will help us to create more information for our presentation. The things we need to find out for this is:

The Magazine:
  • How has the magazine expanded diagonally?
  • How does the magazine make use of new media technologies and/or social media?
  • How does the magazine promote the other arms of it's business within its pages?
  • Would you argue that the magazine has created a 'brand' for itself? How?
  • Complete an analysis of the front cover, contents, editors letter and feature pages - how does the magazine appeal to it's readers.
To do this, I will need to closely analyse the front cover of the magazine, The website, and other websites to go with the magazine. This includes things such as facebook and twitter.

The magazine I have been given to analyse is Heat magazine, which is a magazine aimed at females, and includes celebrity gossip and lifestyle pages.

Practise Shooting.

Today we decided that we needed to try our parctise shot of the panning and then zoom. We shot many videos, all of which were fairly shaky and could be improved. Therefore, this is our last video and we think it came out the best because you can see the panning and then the zoom into the paper which will be our picture. I feel that this video is shaky at the end, and this is something that we will need to work on as a group.
I think this helped us because we now know what we need to do when we are actually filming this scene for real. Although we are starting with a different scene first, when it gets to this one we will know exactly what to do, therefore making this time effective and useful.

Wednesday 11 January 2012

Shooting Schedule

this is our shooting schedule. We were originally going to start filming Today (Wednesday 11th January) except that Izzy was unable to film then and therefore we stepped back and decided to start filming a little later. We decided that on Thursdays, we were going to film Izzy, however I believe we would have to change this to a Wednesday because more people are free then.

Hopefully we will be able to stick to this and get our first cut done by the deadlines as I think this is important.

Friday 6 January 2012

Lighting

Yesterday Alice, Avey and I decided to find how we could make our printing room red. We decided we needed to play around with different fabrics and card and a lamp. This is the room we are trying to light up.
We went into art to see if they had any red material that could help us within our product. We got a transparent red piece of paper and decided to play around with it with different lights.

This was the piece of paper we were using to create the red lights.
this was our first attempt using the red transparent paper. We used the lights off our phones and so it didnt work very well and this was one corner of the room:

To get this effect we needed to hold up the lights close to the ceiling and this therefore wouldnt be very practical. We then got hold of a lamp and we decided that this worked better. This is the look it created and we think that this works very well. This is what the room looks like when we use a lamp.

Audience

Our target Audience was 15+. This is because we discussed mostly with people of the ages 16 and 17 and this gave us what they wanted to see on the screen. We found that because we are this age, it will be easier to think what these people might like to see, and therefore found that this was the target age we wanted.
After reviewing what the BBFC said was set for this age group, i feel that we will be able to meet this well and with ease.
